Ask, Ask, Ask......

The purpose of this blog is to give everyone an opportunity to ask those questions that are plaguing you and keeping you up nights:).  In reality if you have a simple question or one that is more complex, this blog will help all of us to find some answers.  Everyone is at a very different place with regards to their knowledge and comfort level with MYP. It's not uncommon for us to feel a bit off and mess up.  We will just get better through the process. So with that being said, please feel free to ask and answer until your heart's content. Diane

  1. For our LOTE MYP planner on Community/Neighborhood, we are looking for articles to use on different towns/cities around the world. Wondering if you know of any good resources either in the English language or in the target language - French or Spanish.

    1. Good Question. I have been doing some research to help you maybe with a bit of a different angle. I typed in a google search with World Communities and got quite a few hits. I also have this site from the ibo.org site that has planners too

    2. I also just got on the District's library page and found a lot of sites for world communities on Destiny, Learn 360, and culture grams.

    3. Gloria (and Diane) - A different take but if you want current events there is a way to get the news from different countries from around the world. Go to Google.com and select the News section. Generally you will find it under the "More" drop down. Or go to news.google.com or just search for Google News. Once you get there you can switch which country you want the news from.
Diane - This would be great for Social Studies. Also other subjects like in Science what is the perspective of global warming from other countries?

  2. I have recently been working with teachers 5-8 for both science and SS. I keep hearing that we are teaching a lot of the same things. Is there any way that we can look at the 5-8 curriculum to ensure that we are spiralling instead of repeating? Fifth grade has a really heavy curriculum and if we have curriculum that is already "uncovered" in other graders, we would be able to go more in depth with our students. Thanks for your consideration,

Another question: (Am I was excited about this one...) Elementary teachers were under the impression that we had to be trained in 5 areas for level 1 MYP. Today we were told that we didn't need to be. Which is true?

    Thanks!

  3. I have just received feedback from our consultant Dr. Batsell regarding our questions about being trained for level 1 in every subject. I am going to copy and paste so that you can get the full response for the expert. I think that this will put us all at ease a bit. We still have a lot to figure out but we’re heading in the right direction!

“You are correct in that in non-departmentalized schools, it is not necessary to have all teachers trained in all subject areas. However, what I have seen work in non-departmentalized schools is to identify one or more (depending on the size of the staff) "experts" in the different subject areas. These "experts" then become the teacher leaders for the grade level(s) as well as the representatives for vertical planning with the other content area specialists for the various subject areas. Their expertise is developed through the various levels of IB MYP training and shared with the other grade level teachers through meetings, when developing Unit Planners and during professional development opportunities.”

“Remind and reinforce that the implementation of the programme is a process - not an event. The process occurs over a period of years - not all at once. That is why reflection and revision is so critical to the programme.”

  4. Please explain your acronyms for parents who do not understand them. I did not understand the page in the Hilton newsletters. Teachers seem to forget they are not talking with other teachers. What is LOTE, IB and MYP?

    1. I will certaily help you out!!! MYP refers to the Middle Years Programme through IB which is the International Baccalaureate. LOTE stands for Languages Other Than English with is the traditional foreign language course. It would be French and Spanish here in Hilton

  5. With a primary component of MYP being collaboration, how do you see this happening in your subject and grade level? What would you need to make this successful? How often would this need to take place in order to be productive?

We try to assemble in "grade level" teams often. These are usually organized informally when needed. Department meeting time is not enough. Due to many State initiatives (APPR, pre/post assessments) and District-wide initiatives, department meeting time has not always been used for department items this year. With planners, grade levels will need a pre-unit meeting, mid-unit meeting, and a reflective meeting to be successful. Time? Good question?

I feel that we not only need time to work with our department but also grade level time too. We realized this year that the science curriculum and health curriculum has a lot overlapping topics. It would be great to have some time to work on those connections. We also need time to reflect on the planners that have been written. We have been given time to write the planners but there is so much that needs to go into implementing the planner and there is then little time for reflection.
